In a publishing market almost saturated with books - in Italy in 2017 70,159 were published, i.e. almost 200 titles per day (Istat data of 27 December 2018) - it is increasingly difficult for a reader to find a good book to read and for one writer being able to emerge with his own book . Judging a book by its cover is childish, even though I've done it often. I must say that most of the time it went well for me, even if for some time I have been using other criteria to judge a book, both before purchasing and after reading it. Judging a book: before or after reading it? Good question. In theory one should judge later, but isn't deciding not to buy a book - whatever the reason - essentially making a judgment on it? We judge it not suitable for our reading, our personality, our ideas, our tastes, our sympathies, etc. The reader has a powerful weapon in his hands: don't use them to pay for a book.
The inaction that lowers the number of copies sold by an author. No one can do anything against this inaction. You will never be able to make me read a book if I dislike the Special Data author obnoxiously, if he deals with topics light years away from my values. And, I think, it's like this for everyone. Yes, in a certain sense I judge a book before reading it : I am forced to do so, because I have to spend money and then time to read it. (My) first impression of the book I use subjective criteria to judge a book : the first 4 come into play before purchasing, the last necessarily after reading it. Title : Yes, there are book titles that put me off reading them, as I've said in the past. The title is an important element, because it is the first thing to be read. The taste of the title is obviously subjective.
Cover : if on the one hand you can't judge a book by its cover - because it doesn't make any sense - on the other the cover is the only visual element of the book, and can have a negative impact on the reader. Author : if I am passionate about a writer, I look for other works of his to read, aware that I might not like some. Conversely, if I can't stand an author, just reading his name is enough to make me distance myself from his works. Price : there are 600-page books for 18 euros and 250-page books for 25 euros, and I'm not talking about scientific and illustrated books. What do I do if I think a book is too expensive? If it has had multiple editions, I look for a used one. Otherwise I decide on the spot: I do without it or I make a sacrifice. Errors : I can't give 4 or 5 stars to a book that shows at least one printing error per page.
